Styrene maleic anhydride is a synthetic polymer, a thermoplastic resin that is built-up of styrene and maleic anhydride monomers. It is a low molecular weight co-polymer of styrene and maleic anhydride. The SMA can act as an alternating copolymer wherein the monomers can be alternated. However, the copolymerization with less than 50% maleic anhydride content is also possible. Radical polymerization is used for production of the SMA copolymer while an organic peroxide act as the initiator. The primary characteristics of these copolymer are its excellent heat resistance, high dimensional stability, transparent appearance, and the specific reactivity of the anhydride groups. These copolymers are used for both the organic and inorganic pigments to provide enhanced dispersion stability. It is used as a modifier, protective colloid and as a plasticizer in paints. It also find application in floor polish, surface sizing and clear coating in paper industry and in water based coating.
